Born into a poor family with no prospects of a future, Ecrira was saved only by the bright head on her shoulders, breezing through the education system and landing a position as governess for a rich family that bragged about her skills far and wide, which meant that when she was thrown out for sleeping with the mother of the family, another position soon opened and she moved through high society like this, periphery but important and wielding a lot of influence. At some point throughout this journey, Ecrira met Jan Bacq, a former headmaster of the prestigious all-boys school, Sin-Ullic, who fell in love with her brains and her charms - and for a while she entertained him, to give herself an upper hand, though she refused to marry him although he proposed several times. As he aged and grew frail, he put her in his will as sole inheritor and when he died only days later, seemingly passing peacefully in his sleep, his great wealth was hers. The rest is history.

What would be the fifth year of excellence for Sin-Gerde, the 20-year-old Mirie Nerab is sorted into Ecrira's high level class and although an extremely gifted mind, she has a rebellious and unyielding spirit that doesn't, like most others, submit to Ecrira's authority and methods. Provoked. Ecrira begins a quiet warfare of dominance against the grad school student, trying in every way to break her, from physical abuse to sexual coercion, but nothing works. In the end, it is Ecrira who must bow to the girl, seeing Sin-Gerde losing its first place in the ranks due to her own single-minded focus and arrogance.

Sin-Gerde is a highly exclusive "grad school", a specific kind of boarding school that prepares its students for the final exams, which has for the past four years been at the top of its division under its new management, headmistress Ecrira LaDal. Ecrira is a former private tutor and governess who, after inheriting her aging benefactor's money, bought the old, decrepit school and upgraded it into a two-class all-girls grad school that within a couple of years of her methods took first place in excellence and final grades across the board. After this, the wealthy and elite families of Cefran have lined up to have their daughters sent to Sin-Gerde to finish their education, the school located in a big mansion outside the city walls, running by its own laws and regulations without outside interference or supervision. At Sin-Gerde, Ecrira is the highest authority and everything runs by her word and by her pointer. She is the headmistress of the school's 50 students, age 19-20, and teacher of the 25 students who have made it into Class 1, the high-level class for the best and most talented girls.

Part of the Twelve City State System, Cefran is an independent city state with its own rules for education, but whose final results and grades each year are compared with those of the other eleven city states, so their schools can be ranked from worst to best. Over a period of six years, Sin-Gerde has snuck from bottom-tier to the top - something which is not only prestigious, but the city states with the best schools are paid in gold for their accomplishments and a percentage of this reward goes to the school leadership to keep improving the best schools. This is because the Twelve City States have a philosophy of excellence in common and their citizens are all encouraged, in various ways, to perform exceptionally and be the best of the best in their various fields.
